Autumn 2026. At last there is time for my second big project this year! The first one was Oh là là Côte d'Azur. My garden has given everything: the leaves, in the loveliest shapes and every size, are ‘ripe’ for the studio.

A herbarium? Herb-a-what?
A herbarium is a collection of plants in which parts such as leaves, flowers and stems are pressed, dried and fixed to paper. In mine, freshly picked leaves from the garden are pressed, printed, painted over and rolled over. The result is a series of monotypes in oil on paper, from huge formats of 100 x 140 cm to many smaller ones in A3 and A4. As the name suggests, a monotype is always unique: unlike an edition print, the process allows no repetition.

The plants from my garden are not only subjects but also collaborators. Veins, edges, gaps: what a leaf lets be printed of itself is not only my decision.

And no, it is not like at nursery, where you press a brightly painted leaf onto paper and hope for a pretty effect. As simple as it sounds, it is just as difficult – trial and error sit very close together here. Not every leaf works. And the whole leaf does not always work; sometimes it has to run off the edge of the paper. Here it is again, the planned chance that has long interested me: I create the conditions, but there is no such thing as a result at the push of a button.

If you do not want to dig around:

Here sometimes Stephan put together a small collection of his paintings for your convenience. Either new works he wants to show or issues that have touched him just intensively.

Enjoy.
